This paper presents Korean phonology as it relates to letter-to-sound rules. It provides a phonological framework for developing a Grapheme-to-Phoneme conversion system, which may be used in text-to-speech systems or speech recognition systems. The research results in providing a systematic description of phonological alternations for the standard Korean pronunciation, which shows the relationship between the orthographic system and pronunciation. Based on the entries of a general Korean dictionary and a special dictionary of Korean particles and endings, all possible combinations of consonants and vowels and their realizations will be examined. This will help to provide an understanding of the Korean language from a phonological point of view, to develop a Grapheme-to-Phoneme conversion system for text-to-speech or a lexicon for speech recognition, which respectively reflects Korean standard pronunciation, and, furthermore, to lay the groundwork for the development of a multiple pronunciation lexicon for speech recognition.
