Recent Development in German Noise Policy

German legislation on noise is split up in a lot of separate laws, ordinances and other regulations concerning the various noise sources (road, rail, aircraft, industry, construction sites, sports and leisure grounds, shooting areas, etc.). Some of these regulations concern the noise emission from products, others regulate the exposure due to the noise sources in the neighbourhood of these sources. Emission regulations are normally determined by European legislation (European Directives); they give noise limits to be met when the product is placed on the market. Sometimes the products have to be labelled with sound power level that is guaranteed by the manufacturer. A new development in Germany is that transposing the so called Outdoor Directive the use of the products covered by the Directive in dwelling areas has been limited.
