Comparison of Purity Analyses of a Hindered Phenol Antioxidant Using HPLC and DSC Methods

Hindered phenol antioxidants such as N,N'-hexamethylenebis(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4- hydroxyhydrocinnamide) are used in many industrial applications. HPLC analysis and the DSC van't Hoff method were used to measure the purity of samples of this material obtained from several commercial sources as well as to determine the effects of a process change on purity. Both methods gave reproducible results but were subject to different types of uncertainties. The two methods gave results that were in reasonable agreement with each other.
