Comparison of the Control Strategies for Hybrid Bus using road test and ADVISOR model

The Italian Agency for Energy, Environment and New Technology (ENEA) has conducted a series of road test on the IVECO Altrobus Urban Hybrid Bus. Data collection, including consumption, electric and emission measurements, were performed during the real "on the road" condition along the transit line in Rome. Results of these test have been used to modeling the vehicle using the Advanced Vehicle Simulator (ADVISOR) developed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). This paper will focus on the comparison between model predictions and test results using the real driving cycle. Furthermore test results have been used to calibrate the ADVISOR model in order to analyze and compare different hybrid control strategies. Comparative analysis have been conducted using three control approach to increase environmental performance or energy efficiency. Comparison have been performed analyzing consumption, emission and battery state of charge. Results from the testing have shown a good agreement with the model predictions and the control strategy comparison have yielded interesting information about the batteries and vehicle performance.
