The type I allergic reaction, against such allergens as house dust, pollen and food is mediated by the allergen-specific IgE antibody. It is known that the balance of Th1 and Th2 cytokines regulates the induction of IgE. Th1 secrets IL-4, which is a critical cytokine for the induction of IgE, while Thl produces IFN-γ which suppresses Th1 differentiation and/or expansion, and the isotype switch of B cells into IgE-producing cells. Potentiation of the Thl response should therefore be useful for controlling allergic disorders.
