Iron compounds have been found to be useful flame retardant co-additives in several polymers. Their activity has previously been studied in halogen systems. Their utility in non-halogen and halogen-phosphate combinations has now been recognized in polyamides and PBT. The iron compounds appear to improve char morphology. Recent results from studies of iron compounds in rigid polyurethane foams are presented. The possible use of iron compounds in vapor-phase flame inhibition will be mentioned as a topic for further research.
