Many organizations have successfully implemented Six Sigma (6σ) quality programs, but have begun to hit what they call the 5-sigma barrier ? they have discovered that you can only get so much quality improvement from the back end of the development process. To overcome this 5-sigma barrier, organizations are increasingly adopting the Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) methodology that in many ways reflects the "systematics" of product development. This paper examines the Six Sigma and DFSS approach and how DFSS in essence is a "Statistical Systems Engineering" approach that can achieve six-sigma levels and beyond in product development.
