We have shared a method for implementing space-based laser absorption spectroscopy system. This method offers: 1. Compliant with the Science Requirements outlined in the National Academy of Science Earth Science Decadal Study and other reports, 2. Compliant with NASA mission cost cap 3. Compliant with the resources of a Taurus class spacecraft and launch system 4. Low risk of implementation 5. Robust telecom components which are manufactured in high volumes with established manufacturing processes and high reliability 6. Demonstrated prototype We believe that development of a space borne Lidar for CO_2 detection should start now so that the system can build on the ground segment capabilities being put in place for NASA's Orbiting Carbon Observatory mission.
