The paper presents a study on the effect of flow of contaminants through an embankment of granular soil. Tests were conducted on an embankment of granular soil in a seepage tank. Different concentrations of contaminant (Na_2 SO_4 solution) were allowed to pass through the embankment under constant head. The permeability of the granular soil was found to increase with increase in concentrations of contaminant. Percentage of sulphate ions in soil increased after each test with increased degrees of contaminant. Cation exchange capacity increased along the top flow line of seepage from u/s to d/s end of the embankment. Cation exchange capacity was found to decease with increase in source concentration at a particular point.
