Combination Factors for Wind and Snow Derived from Measured Data

For the design of the light weight roof of the stadium in Hannover, Germany realistic combination rules for wind and snow loads are derived from an evaluation of meteorological data. In the oppinion of many experts the combination factors for wind and snow given in the Eurocodes are safe sided, and due to the fact that for the structure of the roof these climatic actions are decisive these values should be replaced by more realistic recommendations. Here for the ULS a combination factor of ψ_0 = 0.04 is obtained. It has to be pointed out that this realistic value, which is much lower than the value given in the Eurocode, is only obtained provided that correlation effects between wind and snow are taken into account. In this investigation this is done by applying wind and snow data which were recorded simultaneously.
