A multilayered one-dimensional snow model which accounted for the relevant massand energy transfer processes, was used to model the properties of a winter snowpack. Measurements of snow cover mass, vertical temperature, and meteorological variables were available at an experimental site in Southern Finland for the 1993-94 winter season. The quality of data was checked by comparing the measured meteorological variables with those at the nearest weather stations. The experimental site measurements were used to determine the relevant soil and snow initial conditions for the model. The model results indicated that the calculated snow mass and temperature were in good agreement with the measurements and the model was able to simulate the formation of an ice layer immediately above the soil surface. The sensitivity of the model to prescribed systematic and random perturbations in the input data series was examined.
