Considerable effort has been made to develop trackless autonomous welding robots with good adsorption ability and capability of huge payload and crawling on curved surfaces in all positions. Such robots are expected to have great commercial prospects; however, unfortunately, so far they have been rarely used in industry. This is mainly due to the lack of work to qualify the new robotic welding technology. A roadmap is drawn for the purpose of systematic qualification of the welding technology.
