A study has been performed to identify opportunities for early application of CO_2 sequestration. Hereto, promising cases were selected on a worldwide basis. These cases consist of high purity CO_2 sources, which can provide relatively large amounts of CO_2 at low costs to an oil field or coal occurrence, where the CO_2 is stored and used for additional oil/methane production by means of CO_2-EOR/CO_2-ECBM. A Multi Criteria Analysis (MCA), in which technical, economical and social factors are accounted, is applied to select promising cases from a long list of potential cases. In co-operation with IEA-GHG, the results from the MCA were considered in more detail to select 4 cases: 2 CO_2-EOR cases (US and Saudi Arabia) and 2 CO_2-ECBM cases (Canada and China). A mass and energy balance was set up for these cases and an economic evaluation was performed to determine sequestration costs. In order to determine the impact of several important parameters on sequestration costs, a sensitivity analysis was performed. Despite the uncertainty in several parameters, it appeared that the selected CO_2-EOR cases are economically feasible, whereas the 2 CO_2-ECBM cases need an incentive to become commercially applied under current conditions.
