A number of investigations were performed on the effect of using different types of heat exchangers on the manner which solid layers form around cooled surfaces immersed in liquid PCM. Five types of heat exchanger arrangements were used and compared. Non-dimensional time-mass correlations of the experimental and numerically predicted results were achieved using the surface areas (A_f/A_uf) and solid mass (M_f/M_uf) ratios as basis for analysis. Useful correlation coefficients in equations of the form M = C (DELTA t)~n are presented and discussed.
