Future of Feeding Animal By-Products

Animal proteins and fats are important classes of ingredients for animal nutritionists to use in feed formulas. The United States rendering industry produces nutrient rich products that are nutritious and safe to use in livestock, poultry, pet, and aquaculture feeds. The rendering process stabilizes raw animal byproducts with heat, which evaporates the water and provides a sterilizing effect to kill conventional pathogens. However, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) issues will continue to be thegreatest challenge for the rendering industry and will influence the use of animal by-products in feed for years to come. As federal agencies expand the list of animal tissues that can not be used to make animal feed ingredients, problems associated with the disposal of those tissues will increase. To address this, rendering facilities that are dedicated either to the production of feed-grade animal by-products or the disposal of materials that can no longer be used in feed will be needed. However, regulations requiring that all options used for the disposal of animal by-products and mortalities meet uniform standards for biosecurity, traceability, and environmental protection will be necessary before disposal rendering will be sustainable. The safety of feed-grade animal by-products will be assured through Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and hazard analysis critical control point (HACCP) programs already in use by the industry and independent certification programs that are being developed.
