Strategic Study on the Yellow River Regulation and Water Supply

This paper presents methods about three major problems in the Yellow River: sediment accumulation in the lower reach, water stress in the basin and flood threat. The proposed solutions include 1) ocean reservoirs to salvage flood water, 2) pump stations at the Yellow River mouth and along the river course to the lower river bed, 3) installation of soft pipes or curtains along the river course to stabilize the main channel, 4) enhancement of levee strength using geotextile. The feasibility in terms of engineering and construction cost is estimated. The preliminary analysis shows that three major problems in Yellow River are solvable with the proposed simple and economic ways.
