A new centrifugal casting process which can manufacture hollow metal spheres in one step was developed. Hollow spheres with 70 mm O.D. and approximately 3 mm thickness were cast with Sn alloys and Al alloys. Process parameters, such as pouring temperature, rotation rate, the ratio of two axial rotation rates were optimized experimentally. In case of pure Sn and Sn-Cu eutectic alloy, good results were obtained with melt superheat of 120 deg C, rotation rate of 500 rpm and the rotation ratio of 0.9:1. In case of Al alloys, the alloy solidifying in mushy type could hardly be formed directly in metallic mold, while it was possible in sand mold. The wall thickness of the sphere can be varied by changing the pouring amount.
