Even though the flow force has been explained in the literature more than 50 years ago, there remain several problems to be addressed. Servovalves solved the problem of the flow force in a hydraulic valve, but also removed the need to better understand the origin of it. The paper discusses the momentum model explaining the origin of the flow force, and points out several of its deficiencies when applied to reduce the magnitude of the flow force.
