摘要

Clostridium novyi is an obligate anaerobic organism whose normal habitat is the lower intestinal tract. There have been numerous reports in the literature associating C. novyi with sudden death in sows. These acute deaths are characterized by extremely rapid decomposition and typical clostridial lesions, including excessive gas production, marked degeneration of the tissues, and hepatic emphysema. Prior to death, spores are distributed around the body. Spores in anorexic tissues become vegetative andproduce toxin. This process is hypothesized to be associated with changes in the tissue mi-croenvironment, particularly changes associated with tissue damage. Toxin production in the liver followed by systemic distribution results in a rapid and fulminating toxemia.
