Evidence of genetics influence on the expression of porcine circovirus disease (PCVD) in postweaning pigs

Porcine circovirus disease (PCVD) in the postweaning area (postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome) can be defined as a multifactorial disease which involves infection of pigs with porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) and the influence of infectious/non-infectious triggers for the development of clinical disease). When the disease appears, it may present a variable morbidity (43-0%), and lethality is usually high (708-0%). Field observations from farmers and veterinarians have suggested that certain genetic lines of pigs, specifically in relation to boar lines, are more or less susceptible to postweaning-PCVD. In a preliminary experimental study, it has been suggested that Landrace pigs seem to be more susceptible to develop PCVD when compared with Duroc and Large White pigs. On the other hand, no differences were found when comparing PCVD expression in affected farms using their usual breed versus introducing a terminal Pietrain boar. Besides those studies, to date, minimal scientific studies focused on the relationship between genetics and PCVD development have been carried out. Therefore, the objective of the present work was to compare the effect of three different genetic boar lines in two different Spanish farms on the outcome of general andPCVD associated postweaning mortality (PWM) of their offspring.
