摘要

Enteric pathogens are a major concern in the livestock industry. Enterotoxigenic E. coli cause clinical disease in the animals whereas other pathogens such as Salmonella may not produce clinical symptoms but cause food-borne infections in humans. Enterotoxigenic E. coli infections are the most common cause of colibacillosis in pigs. These infections result in significant losses in both newborn pigs as well as those at the post weaning age (post weaning diarrhea and edema disease). E. coli strains possessing adhesins K88 (F4) or K99 (F5) account for a major portion of the colibacilosis in newborn piglets. In the case of post weaning diarrhea and edema disease, the major contributors are E. coli possessing K88 or F18 adhesins, respectively.
