摘要

The impact of emissions from concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) on neighboring residences and businesses has received increasing interest in recent years. Air quality studies have shown that animal production facilities have the potentialto emit ammonia (NH_3, Harper et al, 2000) methane (CH4, Harper et al., 2000; Zahn et al., 2001), hydrogen sulfide (H2S, Jacobson et al., 1997), particulate matter (Van Wicklin, 1997) and volatile organic compounds (Zahn et al., 2001). The emission ratesfor certain hazardous substances emitted from CAFOs, including NH3 and FI2S have the potential to exceed Clean Air Act reporting thresholds (45.4 kg*day~(-1), or 100 lbs*day~(-1)) that are enforced under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA; 40 C.F.R. Part 302); therefore, the sustainability of many animal production operations is dependent upon reducing gas emissions from these facilities.
