A field experience using oregano essential oil in herds with hemorrhagic bowel syndrome

Hemorrhagic Bowel Syndrome (HBS) is a condition in finishing pigs between 2-6 months of age known to cause sporadic sudden mortality. It has been theorized that intestinal volvulus may account for most, if not all, of what has been described as HBS.1Others have speculated that excessive gas production in the caudal intestine is actually the underlying cause of HBS. Post mortem observations include a pale carcass with abdominal distension, gas distended intestines markedly reddened and filled with blood stained watery fluid. The jejunum is thin walled and absent of inflammation. The stomach is filled with feed. These authors propose the name 'Porcine Intestinal Distension Syndrome' (PIDS) as more accurately reflecting the nature and cause of this condition.
