Pharmacokinetics of ketoprofen in adult Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica)

Forty-five adult Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) were used in a crossover study to evaluate the pharmacokinetics of ketoprofen, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug. Ketoprofen was administered (2 mg/kg) by 3 different routes: oral, intramuscular, and intravenous. Plasma concentrations of ketoprofen were within the detectable range for the longest period of time following oral administration. The clearance of ketoprofen in quail appeared to be rapid. Pharmacodynamic studies are needed to adequately determine the potential usefulness of ketoprofen in birds.
