A NESTED PCR TEST FOR DIRECT DETECTION OF TOXIGENIC PASTEURELLA MULTOCIDA

Rapid, sensitive and specific methods to detect toxigenic Pasteurella multocida are needed for improved control of progressive atrophic rhinitis (PAR) in pigs, particularly in eradication programs (1,2). A nested PCR assay for the detection of toxigenic P. multocida was designed and the specificity and sensitivity were evaluated. The test was used to detect toxigenic P. multocida in porcine clinical specimens. The results of the nested PCR test were compared with those of an ELISA test for the detection of P. multocida toxin.
