摘要

E. coli is known to cause edema disease (ED) and postweaning diarrhea (PWD) in swine leading to an important economic loss and mortality between weaning and market. ED and PWD are both caused primarily by hemolytic E. coli proliferating in the small intestine. ED can occur in both weaned pigs and grower pigs and is characterized by subcutaneous and subserosal edema, a progressive ataxia, paralysis and a high mortality (1). PWD is commonly observed at 7-10 days post weaning and is characterized by reduced growth rate, severe secretory diarrhea, hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, or death (1,2). The objective of this study was to determine the genetic diversity among E. coli isolates from different swine production regions using random amplified polymorphicDNA analysis (RAPD) and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE).
