Fucoidans are polysaccharides with high antithrombotic activities, low anticoagulant effect and thus low haemorrhagic risk in rabbit. Theyinhibit smooth muscle cell proliferation (Logeart et al., 1997) which is a crucial step in the formation of atherosclerotic lesions, and exhibit an in vitro proangiogenic effect. They are thus potential promising antithrom-botic drugs which could be of interest in preventing restenosis or potentiating neovascularization of ischaemic areas.
