The future of the base metals mining industry is difficult to predict given the dramatic changes the sector is currently undergoing. The catastrophic and unforeseen drop in copper and zinc prices over the past year has created an increasingly competitive environment forcing pressure on all mining companies to produce metals and concentrates at decreased costs but with increased efficiencies. In this competitive market situation only the strongest and most flexible mining companies will survive. Navan Mining plc ("Navan") is well prepared to meet the extremely tough challenges the future holds in order to be among those who will succeed. Navan was formed in Ireland in 1987 with a focus on minerals exploration in Ireland and overseas, with a particular emphasis on gold, base metals and hydrocarbons. Since its inception, Navan has changed strategic direction and expanded its asset base to become an European mining company with production and exploration activities in Spain, Bulgaria and Ireland. The expansion process was predominantly achieved through acquisition from various Eastern and Western European governments during their privatisation processes. Today, Navan's operations in Spain and Bulgaria produce a variety of products including copper, lead and zinc concentrates containing gold and silver credits, gravity gold concentrates and various chemical products (such as sulphuric acid and copper sulphate). Its competitive advantage lies in its loyal shareholder base, strong financial support, 2 solid operations and a flexible, skilled and entrepreneurial organisation which enables Navan to adapt and implement the actions necessary to achieve success, even in this uncertain economic climate. The entrepreneurial spirit that inspired Navan to expand beyond minerals exploration continues today, with an aggressive growth strategy in place that puts Navan firmly on course towards its target of becoming a significant European company in exploration, mining, and metal and concentrate production. In short, Navan is well on the path to success in the modern industrial economy.
