The contribution of glucose or glucose degradation products (GDPs) to AGE formation associated with peritoneal dialysis (PD) fluids was determined by incubating lysozyme with PD fluids or glucose or GDPs with or without replenishment of the incubation solutions. Replacement of PD fluid or GDPs enhanced AGE fluorescence generation compared to continuous incubation. The converse occurred with glucose incubations, suggesting that GDPs in sterilised PD fluids are largely responsible for AGE formation.
