A series of experiments were conducted under atmosphere condition to investigate the air-water two-phase flow pattern in a vertical pipe. Differential pressure fluctuations of various flow patterns (bubble, slug, chum and annular flow) and their transitional flows were measured by a differential pressure sensor. The nonlinear characteristics of their flow configurations were analyzed through the return maps on which the extreme values of the fluctuations were plotted. The results show that the magnitude and the baseline of the differential pressure fluctuations can represent the characteristics of the flow configurations. The distribution of the dots on the return map can reflect the characteristics of the flow configurations. The paper proposes a criterion and a new identification method of flow pattern.
