Us national science foundation panel report on international environmentally benign design and manufacturing

This paper summarizes the findings of the Panel for International Assessment of Environmentally Benign Manufacturing Technologies, sponsored by the United States National Science Foundation. The mission of this interdisciplinary panel was to assess the international state-of-the-art, and to identify research priorities and collaborative opportunities. 52 sites in Japan, Europe and the United States were visited over the course of the yearlong study. This paper highlights the key findings of the panel, and the reader is referred to two websites containing the full report [1], along with individual reports for each site visited. Here, the scope of the study is first described, followed by a brief summary of the key differences that were found between Japan, Europe and the United States. This is followed by brief summaries for the electronics and automotive industries. A summary of the current status and limitations of design systems issues follows. One of the panel's key findings was that the Europeans and Japanese view Environmentally Benign Design and Manufacturing (EBDM) as a systems problem to a much greater extent than the US. The concluding section presents critical needs in design analysis and modelling.
