CDEN/RCCI - a Canadian network to enhance design engineering education

Design engineering is critical to the welt being of every developed country. The value, efficiency, environmental impact, and consumer appeal of a product are all set by design. There is even evidence that design impacts students' intellectual development positively [1]. However, design practice, research, and education have not been highly valued in Canadian universities. Within this environment, academics hired to teach design find themselves having to concentrate on engineering science based research and publication in order to assure advancement within the academy. Those academics who persist in teaching design often report a markedly higher workload that do those who teach non-design-oriented courses [2].
