This paper presents an argument for the use of quantitative and qualitative measures to gauge the involvement and understanding students make of an online supported subject. The researchers made use of system log data to analyse the access made by students to an online subject template. Content analysis, employing a framework devised by Henri and Messing, was used to analyse the posts made to the online forum which was accessed via the subject template. Post course interview data was analysed to identify student concerns about use of the forum. The role of the instructor in designing assessment tasks and in creating a cognitive and affective environment is identified as a crucial one in achieving a functional student centred 'classroom'.
