Fermentation by lactic acid bacteria can be used as a means of eliminating Escherichia coli from liquid feed for pigs. The survival rate of six strains of E. coli in fermented liquid feed (FLF) maintained at 20°C or 37°C was determined. At 20°C ittook between 3 h and 9 h for E. coli to be eliminated from FLF, whereas at 37°C no E. coli were detectable after 2.5 h. This has important implications in the management of liquid feed systems.
