A PARTNERSHIP APPROACH TO THE TRANSFER OF INTEGRATED BUILDING PERFORMANCE MODELLING TO PRACTICE

In the UK, the Energy Design Advice Scheme (EDAS; McElroy et al 1997), was successful in facilitating practitioner access to tools for the appraisal of building performance. Now, the Scottish Energy Systems Group (SESG) is taking the next step: not to give designers access to appraisal programs as achieved previously by EDAS, but to transfer the technology into their businesses to attain a competitive edge. The SESG is a joint government, industry and academic venture. Its membership comprises a spectrum of building related organisations: architectural and engineering practices, local authorities, component manufacturers, utilities, renewable energy specialists, software vendors and research bodies. It exists to assist these organisations to gain experience with all aspects of energy and environmental modelling and to remove barriers to uptake imposed by their current work practices. The long term aim is to help companies to evolve in three important respects: enhanced performance robustness through integrated design; better productivity through reduced design development times; and improved competitiveness through the greater potential for inter-organisation collaboration. This paper describes the SESG's modus operandi and summarises the outcome from its principal technology transfer mechanism: a Supported Technology Deployment whereby a software-ready computer is delivered to a company along with an operator who has specialist knowledge of the application(s) in question - all at no cost to the company.
