Increasing global competition has driven manufacturers to improve product quality, time to market, cost structures, delivery, and customer service in order to stay in business. The performance of manufacturing facilities and equipment is critical in supporting these improvement initiatives. Therefore, the need for timely information on the operational status of the equipment, and effective maintenance has become increasingly important. Continuous processing plants, such as power generation plants and pulp and paper mills have benefited greatly from implementing the plant monitoring systems and preventive maintenance programs. On the other hand, this technology has not been effectively adapted for use in discrete-part manufacturing plants. High task variability, intermittent machine operation, and wide range of machine makes and types have all contributed to the difficulty of this problem. A number of commercial systems have been developed to address the needs of discrete-part manufacturers, but these systems tend to be either machine or process specific. None of these systems provide a generic cost-effective solution for integrated continuous machine monitoring and computer-based information management to provide preventive and predictive maintenance information. This research will present a design methodology and implementation of that methodology for the development of a continuous real-time machine monitoring system for preventive and predictive maintenance of the computer numeric controlled machine.
