The effect of a variety of mineral reinforcements, fillers, and surface-active additives (lubricant) on the scratch resistance of black pigmented and filled high-rubber content TPO formulations was investigated. Scratch resistance was determined by a moving stylus-type test based on the Ford 5-finger scratch test methodology with visual determination of scratch whitening on injection-molded grained plaques. The mineral reinforcements and fillers were seen to reduce the scratch resistance of TPOs, whereas certain fatty acid amide-based external lubricant additives were effective in enhancing the scratch resistance. The scratch resistance effectiveness of these fatty acid amides can increase with tune depending on the rate of migration to the surface.
