Partial Platinectomy: The Forgotten Technique? Assessment of Hearing Gain, Complications and Quality of Life

Partial Platinectomy for otosclerosis is now replaced by stapedec-tomy, using various prosthesis. As a result, especially in the UK, platinectomy has become a forgotten or lost technique. Therefore, many ENT trainees are unfamiliar with this technique. To be an excellent Otologist, one should be aware of various surgical methods available.The aim was to assess:1. The average hearing gain and air-bone gap closure over a range of frequencies.2. Immediate and long term complications.3. Quality of life improvements as compared to similar patients using hearing-aids for otosclerosis and a "normal" control group without any hearing deficit. There are very few studies assessing QOL for Otosclerosis.4. The results with other reported stapedectomy techniques.
