There are two types of iatrogenic facial paralysis(IFP):a. IFP which has occurred as part of a planned manipulation of the facial nerve, which can be termed mandatory and b. IFP which has occurred unexpectedly, which can be termed inadvertent.Iatrogenic facial paralysis of the first kind is expected and should be carefully explained to the patient. Inadvertent facial paralysis due to injury during surgery, most commonly chronic otitis surgery has devastating consequences to the patient and the surgeon. The factors that contribute to the injury may be classified under disease, patient and surgeon factors. Steps can be taken to minimize the risk to the facial nerve in each of these categories.
