The aim of this paper is to outline the potential of imaging spectrometry and GIS techniques as tools for the management of data rich environments, as complex fluvial areas, exposed to geologycal, geomorphological and hydrogeological risks. The area of study, the Pescara RIver (Basin (Central Italy) is characterised by the presence of important industrial sites (Sulmona and pescara) and by the occurrence of floods, lanslides and seismic events. Data were collected, during a specific flight, usign an hyperpectral MIVIS sensor (102 channels between 0.43 and 12.7 mum). Images have been processed in order to obtain updated and accurate land-cover and land-use maps that have been inserted in a specific GIS database and integrated with further information like lithology, geological structure, geomorphology, hydrogeoogical features, productive plants location and characters. The processing of data layers was performed, using a dedicated software, through typical GIS operators like indexing, recoding, matrix analysis, proximity analysis. The interactions between natural risks, industrial installations, agricultural areas, water resources and urban settlements have been analysed. This allowed the creation and processing of thematic layers like vulnerability, risk and impact maps.
