The Total Cost of Fastening

Would you like to reduce your fastener and manufacturing costs? This paper investigates each segment of a screw, and how these parts influence purchasing, materials, handling, assembly, rework and field repair costs. Fastener selection in the commercial environment is often treated with disdain and misunderstanding and typically assigned to the junior engineer or buyer. "BUY IT CHEAP" or buy what's available from a local distributor have been the byword for years. These beliefs are totally erroneous and have led to hidden costs in manufacturing and product reliability problems. We will investigate the interrelationships between the various fastener segments, drive, head, thread, finish etc. and how they relate to standardization, automation, productivity, and total in-place cost.
