Large fiberglass and carbon fiber reinforced test panels were manufactured in an effort to characterize phthalonitrile composites. The qualification effort consisted of a process development phase followed by manufacturing and then testing. As part of the development phase, a high-temperature filament winding process was used to manufacture flat panels. Spencer Composites Corporation was selected for manufacturing the test panels and worked jointly with Electric Boat Corporation in developing the manufacturing processes. This paper describes the processes developed, the quality of the composite panels produced, phthalonitrile resin characteristics that affected the manufacturing process development, and in general, the feasibility of manufacturing composites using phthalonitrile resin.
