BCNU is a potent chemotherapeutic agent used in the treatment of malignant brain tumors. Injecting BCNU directly to the region of a resected glial tumor should delay or prevent tumor recurrence (resected gliomes recur within 2 cm of the original tumor site). Nevertheless, the rapid clearance from the administration site and the high systemic toxicity of this small and lipid-soluble molecule, that can pass freely through the blood-brain barrier, limite its clinical application.
