摘要

A rapidly spreading infection of Salmonella typhimurium 160 decimated house sparrow populations in South-East Tasmania. The infectious agent was spread to other birds via droppings from infected sparrows. Nine human cases have been identified. Back yard feeding practices and birdbaths contributed to the spread of the infectious organism. On May 4, 2010, the Universities Federation for Animal Welfare is holding a conference at the Zoological Society of London's Huxley Lecture Theatre titled: "Wild bird care in the garden." A scientific look at large-scale, do-it-yourself, wildlife management. One must question the practice of wild bird care. Is it in the best interests of the birds? I suggest that it is not and the following history speaks to this issue.
