Alternative medicine remedies have gained increased attention and use by veterinary practitioners. As scientists trained in evidence based medicine, many clinicians desire fact based information as opposed to unsubstantiated testimonials regarding safety, mechanism of action, and efficacy of a particular remedy. Unfortunately, for many products, this information is not available. Owing to the relaxed legal requirements for sale of alternative, nutraceutical, and herbal remedies, the potency and bioavailability of individual products are largely unknown or undisclosed. This presentation focuses on fact based information regarding s-adenosylmethionine (SAMe), a nutraceutical having a large potential spectrum of biochemical and biophysical benefits. Information presented is derived from basic scientific investigations as well as work in humans, animal models, and dogs and cats.
