While most of the over 40 species within the Bacillus genus are harmless spore-forming bacteria, some of them are involved in the transmission of diseases to humans. For example, Bacillus anthracis as the causative agent of the infectious disease anthrax has gained notoriety for being a potential bio-weapon agent due to its relative ease of preparation and dispersion as well as its longevity under environmental stress. The rapid and accurate identification of bacterial endospores thus is a vital task for first-responders in order to facilitate timely and appropriate actions in situations, where pathogenic endospores were naturally or intentionally released in buildings or distributed in the environment.
