Attention is increasingly being given to the resonance Raman (RR) component of SERS. In this enhancement mechanism the adsorbate molecules are more actively involved than in the more metal-based electromagnetic SERS effect, and appropriately chosen test moleculels have an important role in establishing the theory. The main parat of this talk is to present some recent SERS measurements on the most veerable of test molecules pyridine, and to examine these with particular reference to the RR SERS effect and to the influence of molecular symmetry in this enhancement mechanism.
