Recent developments in low-cost, high reliability, cryocoolers using a mixed refrigerant, cascade, throttle expansion cooling cycle, are beginning to have their impact on electronics. These are finding applications for the cooling of low noise microwave amplifiers, medical devices and in the cryo-acceleration of personal computers. As smaller and lighter compressors become available active cryogenic cooling can be expected to find application in many other areas of electronics.
