Two surfaces remaining in the relative motion tend to the state characterized by optimal surface roughness. A complex roughness parameter has been used to describe original and optimal shaft surface roughness. This parameter should be recommended specially for such sliding pairs as oil lip seal-shaft. Transition from original into optimal surface roughness relies, first of all, on the change of average value of asperities radii and asperities distribution in circumferential direction. The main parameters of optimal surface roughness of steel shafts have been presented.
