Since the establishment of the Danish national Salmonella enterica surveillance programme (1), the prevalence of seropositive slaughter pigs has decreased. In order to further reduce the occurrence of Salmonella in Danish pork, an investigation was carried out to illustrate the influence of the Salmonella status of sow herds on the Salmonella infection in finisher herds, to which the sow herds deliver growers. This presentation makes up the first part of the investigation, including serological and microbiological data and risk factor analysis in sow herds. The second part of the investigation, which describes the effect on Salmonella in finisher herds, will be presented by Jan Dahl. The aim of this part of the present study was to show a possible association between the serological status of sows and the occurrence of Salmonella in weaners. Furthermore, some potential risk factors were included to assess their effect on the serological status of the sows and the occurrence of Salmonella among weaners.
